South Passage:

Adventure Under the Sail (STAQ Inc.)

The Sail Training Ship STS South Passage is owned and operated by the registered Charity and not-for-profit association – The Sail Training Association of Qld Inc. The members of the association are volunteers, many with and without a background in sailing but all with a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of young people.

The founders, Simon and Marilyn Steenland, created South Passage in 1988, after seeing the tall ships from around the world in Brisbane on their way to the bicentennial celebrations in Sydney.

She was launched on 23 September 1993 and named ‘South Passage’ after the channel between Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands. Her maiden voyage with 24 voyagers was in December 1993.

Since then, she has taken over 40,000 young and not so young people sailing on voyages varying from six hours to seven days. Our crew love what they do and are passionate about inspiring the young and young at heart.

Our Vision:

To create positive change in the lives of everyone who experiences South Passage – Adventure Under Sail.

Our Mission:

Sails and Voyages

School Voyages are outdoor adventures focused on students gaining a deep understanding of working as a team, taking the initiative, and taking responsibility for themselves and others  as they learn about sailing and managing the entire ship.

An entire voyage typically includes 22 students and 2 teachers on board. All participants are required to be actively involved in onboard activities to make the ship work. Teachers are provided with flexibility as to how involved they want to be with the students, given that there are crew responsible for specific tasks.

The cost for a typical 3-day voyage is $190.00 per student per day. This provides everything for the journey, including food, accommodation, training, and an unforgettable experience!
