South Passage Foundation Limited was established by The Sail Training Association of Queensland Inc. (STAQ Inc.) to create an opportunity for disadvantaged or at-risk people to participate and have an equal opportunity to hop on board and experience a life-changing expedition.

The Foundation was registered in May 2020 and was granted a Tax Deductible Gift Recipient Status (DGR) shortly thereafter.  The Foundation aims to enable people in need to participate in and benefit from the life-changing experience on South Passage – a traditional tall ship.

The South Passage Foundation Limited will pursue its charitable purpose by:

  • Providing opportunities to build resilience and purpose through adventure, participation and challenge using a traditional Tall Sailing Ship
  • Providing practical and academic training opportunities to enable acquisition of maritime competencies; and
  • Assisting to develop leadership skills, character, talent, and potential to facilitate employment and enhanced quality of life.

South Passage Foundation Limited is able to provide tax receipts for you to claim under the Tax-Deductible Gift Receipt (DGR) status.

  2. Corporate businesses – We highly appreciate corporate donors who are open heartedly supporting our purpose.

Governance

The South Passage Foundation Limited is managed by a Board comprising three (3) volunteer directors who are committed to achieving the foundation's purpose to raise funding to support those who need support. One of the directors is currently on the board of directors of STAQ Inc. The board is supported by a co-opted Secretary and Marketing Co-ordinator. A copy of the Foundations Constitution is available on request..

Ongoing Conduct

All funds received, save for legislated administration costs, will be directed towards providing opportunities for disadvantaged or at-risk people to experience and benefit from ‘international sail training’. Potential costs that may be covered include travel to/from the ship, voyage fees and the provision of personal safety equipment such as wet weather equipment and etc that maybe required to enable full participation.

Daryl Wright

Chairman/President

Daryl Wright is the Founder and CEO of Converse Strategy and Bizprop Chartered Accountants. He has over 40 years of experience in multiple industries in global markets as an International Executive, Board Chairman and Director, Business Advisor, and Chartered Accountant.

Daryl currently holds a Hons Bachelor of Accounting Science from the University of South Africa, is a practising Chartered Accountant certified by CAANZ, and has a Transformation & Complex Change qualification from the Queensland University of Technology. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Directors and a fellow of the Australian Transformation and Turnaround Association.

Neil Richardson

Board Director

B.Bus (Hons), Cert An Husbandry (Hons), RYA Yachtmaster Offshore.

Neil joined STS South Passage as a volunteer in 2003. By 2009 He had become a board member, and during that time, he filled the roles of Treasurer and President. Today he sits on the board as the Past President. After training as a watch leader, he decided to train further and gained his RYA commercial maritime qualifications in 2017. Neil is currently training as one of the ship Sailing Masters.

Professionally, he has always been self-employed in Agriculture after obtaining an Honours degree in Business specialising in Rural Management. This enabled him to manage his family dairy and transport business alongside a livestock trading business.

When Neil is not working as a volunteer creating opportunities onboard STS South Passage to change the lives of the next generation of young Australians, he is semi-retired and plays at raising beef cattle.

Christopher Penfold

Board Director/Treasurer

Immediate past Board member and Treasurer of The Sail Training Association of Qld, Inc (STAQ).

Before joining STAQ, Chris was Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary of Fibrecycle Pty Ltd and Fibrecycle UK Limited, both international businesses involved in consumer goods. Chris is also a fellow of CPA Australia and is a graduate of the Company Directors Course from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
